Imaging technology used in medicine made enormous progress in recent decades and is now commonly used to detect, diagnose, and monitor almost all diseases. With increasing sophistication of the technology the amount of data being produced in medical imaging is staggering. Despite the progress in technology and the quality of imaging data being produced, the interpretation is still done predominantly by radiologists - an approach that has not significantly changed in decades. All healthcare systems experience a shortage of qualified radiologists. Substantial workloads contribute to potential misinterpretations, long waiting times for results, radiologist burnouts, etc.

The goal of the thesis is to develop machine learning techniques that would assist radiologists in their work. This includes worklist prioritization, image quality improvements, automatic interpretation, missed/incidental findings, automatic measurements, etc. Multimodal machine learning, deep learning, radiomics, and classical image and signal processing algorithms will be used. This work will be done with a close collaboration with radiologists and/or other physicians who will advise on clinical significance of the project.

You are expected to:

  • do original research in this field under the direction of the supervisor;
  • participate in the many seminars by internal and external speakers as well as journal clubs and group activities;
  • collaborate with other PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and other Sano employees;
  • learn and enjoy your time in Sano.
What do we require?

Required background and skills of the candidate:

  • Master's degree (completed or near completion) in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, biomedical engineering, etc;
  • experience in Machine Learning frameworks and tools;
  • excellent programming skills in Python;
  • any prior research experience in academia or industry;
  • an interest in pursuing applied research;
  • excellent written and oral English communication skills.
Our offer

We offer a fixed term contract for 40 hours per week for the duration of 4 years. This will be supported by an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The contract will include opportunities to participate in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and master students.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be up to 8000 PLN gross per month, based on a full-time contract (40 hours a week) for the duration of 4 years with private medical care and a sports card.

This PhD will be a collaboration between Sano and a degree awarding body (Warsaw Institute of Technology or AGH). The student will be based in Poland, Krakow operating in conjunction with the Cyfronet supercomputing centre hosted by AGH.
